You Know

The canvas divides into two registers. On the left, a sand-coloured ground, thinly worked and partly bare, holds a passage of black handwriting. The word KNOW sits low and legible; a second line above it stays half withheld, marked rather than spelled out. On the right, the opposite: a saturated field tipping from magenta into orange and yellow at the top and settling into warm ochre below. A cobalt band runs vertically through the centre and pools at the base. Much of the colour is sprayed, soft at its edges, while the writing stays dry and hard.

The work turns on that break. Written, half-suppressed language on one side; atmospheric, almost weather-like colour on the other. Something is claimed or remembered at the left, then dissolves into mood at the right. KNOW, anchored in the cool open corner and left without a sentence to complete it, reads less as knowledge than as a question about whether anything is known at all. The bare ground is what gives the saturation its volume. Without the emptiness, the pink would only decorate.

At this scale the painting stays intimate, closer to a page than a picture, and the restraint of the left half is where its weight sits.
