"Der Mond hatte frei" unfolds like a night without its usual point of reference. Deep blue fields surround a dense vertical composition of black, electric pink, turquoise, red and green. Colours appear to fall, dissolve and interrupt one another, creating a tension between darkness, movement and artificial light.
The title introduces the idea of absence. The moon, traditionally a source of orientation and light in the night, is simply not there. In its place, colour takes over. Bright fragments emerge from the darkness, while the deep blue surrounding them creates a sense of distance and silence.
The painting moves between stillness and intensity. Its central structure feels almost architectural, yet remains unstable and constantly shifting. At 180 × 160 cm, Der Mond hatte frei has a strong physical presence. From a distance, the composition appears clear and monumental. Up close, layers, traces and irregularities reveal the physical process behind the work.
